There are various historical explanations for the origin of the name of “Cambio”. The word means exchange or change, and the exchange in question could have been the one of the post horses used in the area by travellers back and forth from Paris. It might otherwise have been the money exchange, since the piazza was a meeting place of merchants and business people. Or, according to some authorities, the Caffè was the headquarters of the “shopkeepers’ exchange” - “la borsa dei negozianti”. Among the restaurant’s more outstanding guests the great seducer Giacomo Casanova, who mentioned Del Cambio in his Memoirs and Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour, the first Prime Minister of Italy, who used to have a permanently reserved table. Puccini, Balzac, Nietzsche, Verdi, Marinetti, D’Annunzio, Agnelli, Soldati, were all famous habitués. And do not forget today the mesmerizing decoration and furnishing from the XIXth century have been brought back to the original splendour by an accurate restoration.
