In 2000, the St. Simons African-American Heritage Coalition was founded in response to concerns of SSI citizens and property owners around encroachment by land developers. For the last almost quarter century the mission of SSAAHC remains “to educate, preserve, and revitalize African American heritage and culture.” The leadership of SSAAHC and many of the organization’s 125 members are Gullah Geechee, a cultural indigenous group of African Americans, descended from West Africans and a critically endangered cultural group. Thanks to the efforts of SSAAHC, the Gullah Geechee heritage on SSI is rich, vibrant and not forgotten on SSI and beyond its shores.
