Artist bio:
Renowned Russian artist Sergei Grigoriev (Сергей Алексеевич Григорьев; Сергій Олексійович Григор'єв)(1910-1988) played a major role in the formation of the “Soviet Ukraine” school of art as an outstanding painter and teacher.
Grigoriev embarked on his artistic career in the late 1920s to early 1930s. Beginning as a graphic artist, book illustrator, designer of posters and murals, and interior decorator, Grigoriev emerged in the 1930s as a lyrical painter. In his portraits and landscapes, he created images filled with humaneness and harmony with the surrounding world. Within ten years, Grigoriev had established himself in Soviet painting as a mature master of multi-figural, complex compositions.
Grigoriev’s work has been exhibited extensively in Russia and Ukraine, and is held in permanent collections in Russia, Ukraine and Japan.
“If we can speak of a ‘Ukrainian school’, he is undoubtedly the leader. He paints intimate subjects, interior scenes, in a traditional technique.” - Dictionnaire Bénézit
