Lionel Richie’s story comes to life in his songs. Honest lyrics, a willingness to defy categorization and break boundaries, and that immortal voice solidified him as an international superstar, but his legacy goes far beyond music.
He’s sold over 100 million albums worldwide, won an Academy Award®, a Golden Globe, four Grammy Awards, five People’s Choice Awards, and 16 American Music Awards, but he’s just as proud of achievements such as his honorary doctorates from Tuskegee University and Boston College, Tuskegee University Bachelor’s Degree, membership in the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha who also counts Thurgood Marshall and Martin Luther King Jr. amongst its brethren.
At the same time, the staggering string of accolades includes and 2016’s MusiCares Person of the Year award, ASCAP’s “Publisher of the Year” and “Lifetime Achievement Award,” A World Music Lifetime Achievement Award, TV Land Icon Award, Germany’s Echo Award for Lifetime Achievement, Hong Kong’s Rojo Award, Goldene Kamera Award, Italy’s San Remo Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Governors Award, and more. He’s been inducted to both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and knighted in France receiving the Legionnaire Award. Always giving back, his charity work encompasses the likes of Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, UNICEF, and The Art of Elysium.
However, his story remains timeless from The Commodores to his ten-album solo catalog. It’s what attracts fans to see him en masse everywhere from his 2013-2015 tour All The Hits, All Night Long to festivals such as Bonnaroo, Life Is Beautiful, and Glastonbury, which enjoyed its biggest crowd in history during his 2015 headline set. It’s also why the younger generation continues to turn to him. Whether its country’s modern vanguard clamoring to collaborate on 2012’s Tuskegee or Christina Aguilera and Pharrell both requesting him as a guest mentor on NBC’s The Voice, Lionel Richie’s soul circles throughout popular culture.
This year, Lionel was honored as the 2016 MusiCares Person of the Year. At this year’s Grammy Awards Luke Bryan, Demi Lovato, Tyrese Gibson, John Legend, and Meghan Trainor combined their talents to perform some of his greatest hits, paying perfect tribute to his iconic career. In June, he received the Songwriters Hall of Fame highest achievement, the Johnny Mercer Award. This month in July, he won Britain’s prestigious Nordoff Robbin's Silver Clef Award.
He currently has an on-going Las Vegas residency at Axis Theatre at Planet Hollywood. It all comes back to relaying that story though. “I don’t consider myself a singer as much as I do a storyteller,” he says. “That’s how you connect.”
