From 2009 – 2020, Dr. David Pate led St. Luke’s Health System in Idaho as its President and Chief Executive Officer. Pate, a physician specializing in internal medicine and a health care attorney, led significant growth in the health system, while at the same time driving performance to become recognized as one of the Top 15 Health Systems in the country for quality and a transformation of the business model from fee-for-service to value, under which the health system manages the outcomes and total cost of care for about a third of its business.
Today, St. Luke’s Health System is an integrated delivery system consisting of eight hospitals, a children’s hospital, a nationally recognized community cancer center and more than 200 ambulatory clinic sites throughout southern Idaho and eastern Oregon. He is a popular and engaging speaker, as well as, an author, teacher, lecturer, community volunteer, a member of Idaho Governor's Coronavirus Task Force, active member of the community and professional boards and committees.
He writes a popular blog on health care issues, law, and public policy at drpatesblog.com. Known for his ability to distill complicated medical and legal issues down to what the public needs to understand in order to make an educated position on the topic for themselves, his frankness, his criticisms of both sides of the political aisle, and his ability to speak to the pros and cons of medical, legal and public policy issues, Pate is at his best when he is engaging in questions and answers with an audience.
Dr. Pate is a frequent speaker on issues of health care reform, health care policy, transformation of health care, health care strategy, medical education, and the coronavirus pandemic. Not only does Pate identify the issues, but he proposes solutions and indeed, has put many of those solutions into his work of leading Idaho’s largest health system and transforming it into a national leader in both the much-needed business model transformation and quality.
