WHAT IS A SEAT FILLER? A seat filler’s job is to fill all of the empty seats located in the camera section of the audience. Seat fillers help ensure that camera shots of the audience throughout the telecast show seats that are full rather than empty. Seat fillers move in and out of seats during commercial breaks when the talent, or their guest, leave from and return to the seats. Some seat fillers will get lucky and never have to move during the entire night, while others may move several times. It is similar to a game of musical chairs. Production staff direct the seat fillers as to exactly where to sit, so close attention to direction is a very important part of the seat filler position. There is a very limited amount of time to get to and from seats, so upon receiving direction, the seat filler must move quickly. There will be times that there will not be seats available for everyone, however, VIP seat fillers will be given preferred status when possible. During any time that there are no seats to fill, seat fillers are directed to return back to the holding area.
