Born and raised in Kenya and the United Kingdom, Anthony Russell is an artist, designer, musician, and conservationist.
Russell's haunting canvases are imbued with a powerful sensuality, portraying a potent sense of what Africa is about — a continent of contradictions, raw earthiness and extraordinary beauty. Drawing upon a lifetime of experience in the African wilderness, a deep knowledge of tribal culture, a passion for wildlife, and a rebellious and artistic spirit, Russell has created multiple art series in recent years. Each series incorporates photographic images from the natural world, animals and people, collected over a twenty-year span. Working mostly with sepia tones, sharply contrasted with vivid tribal images, Russell's work is layered with different media — ash from Maasai witchdoctor fires, organic copper and gold powders, natural inks, ostrich shell beads, white Kisongo beadwork — applied by hand, thumb and brush. The luminous and rich quality of the art is much like Africa: magically appealing, mysterious and dimensional.
His exhibitions have helped to fund numerous African conservation causes. In addition to his art, Russell has built eco-friendly luxury safari camps and lodges. He has worked with Richard Leakey, Ian Douglas Hamilton, George Saitoti, Paul Allen and Donna Karan on community design orientation projects and pure wildlife protection projects. Among Russell's supporters are musician Ronnie Wood, designers Calvin Klein and Stefano Gabbana, and photographer David Bailey, along with the Ford Foundation, the UN and the European Union biodiversity programs..
