Artist Bio:
Steven Smeltzer's artistic journey began during his college years when he took a ceramics class. Although he initially intended to create pottery, he found his true calling in crafting unique creatures by adding faces to his creations. His love for surfing and life on the islands of Hawaii provided him with inspiration, merging the tropical lifestyle and respect for the ocean with his distinctive artistic twist.
Smeltzer's sculptures are made from high-fire stoneware, and he uses porcelain clay for the eyes. He employs an oxide strain and acrylic paint to infuse vibrant colors into his pieces. He openly acknowledges Dr. Seuss as his favorite artist and embraces a sense of playful nonsense in his work.
While renowned for his whimsical ceramic sculptures, Smeltzer also ventures into bronze sculptures, oil and acrylic paintings, and even CGI animation. His work has taken a surprising turn into the world of young adult dark fantasy literature, with his whimsical characters playing antagonistic roles in a novel.
Drawn to Maui's laid-back lifestyle and life as an artist, Smeltzer continues to be fueled by his love for the ocean and his passion for surfing. His art is a reflection of his desire to bring a sense of joy and imagination to those who engage with it, making people smile and fulfilling his artistic nature.
