Dan Schulman most recently served as the President and CEO of PayPal from 2014 to 2023. During his tenure, PayPal went public on the NASDAQ and grew its market capitalization by 125%. Its revenues tripled from $8B to $30 billion, its free cash flow tripled from $1.4B to over $5B, while its global customer base grew to 435 million, and its payments volume quintupled to $1.5 trillion. During his tenure, Fortune ranked PayPal as the #1 company in the world for its work in tackling the biggest challenges facing society. Just Capital ranked PayPal #5 in the USA as a role model for companies “doing right by America” and highlighted the company's efforts in promoting financial health for all its employees.
Dan is currently the Chairman of the board of Just Capital, Vice Chairman of the Valor Capital Group, the designated lead independent director of the Verizon board of directors, and is a member of the Lazard, Cisco Communications, and the Cleveland Clinic board of directors. Prior to his tenure at PayPal, Dan served as Group President at American Express, the founding CEO of Virgin Mobile USA, the President and CEO of the Priceline group (Bookings.com), and spent 18 years at AT&T, running its consumer and Internet divisions.
Dan’s leadership has received numerous accolades, including ranking third on Fortune’s list of the World’s Greatest Leaders, three consecutive appearances on Fortune’s Top 20 CEOs of the Year list, Fast Company’s Top 100 Most Creative People, and Glassdoor’s Top 50 CEOs.
Dan has also received numerous awards for his commitment to social change and economic empowerment, including the 2020 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Award, the 2021 Frederick Douglass Award from the New York Urban League, the Voices of Solidarity Award, and the Brennan Legacy award, to honor his career-long commitment to social justice and “common human dignity.” He has received “Visionary Awards” from the Financial Health Network and the Council for Economic Education for his promotion of economic inclusion and financial literacy. He has received honorary doctorate degrees from Rutgers University and Middlebury College and delivered the commencement speech at both institutions. In 2021, he was knighted and awarded Luxembourg’s Order of the Oak Crown honor, presented by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. In 2024, he received his second knighthood as a Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor from President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.
Dan is actively involved in the World Economic Forum, as a member of the International Business Council, and the Board of Governors and Board of Stewards for the Future of Financial & Monetary Systems platform. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Business Roundtable and is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Dan is an avid practitioner of mixed martial arts.
