These items are offered in the ACLU SoCal’s holiday auction celebrating the 25th anniversary of The West Wing. Please look for all of the items donated to this auction by the cast and creators of this amazing show. Lily Tomlin has donated an array of wonderful items to the in six groupings. On The West Wing, she portrayed Deborah Fiderer, the second Executive Secretary to President Josiah Bartlet. Fiderer previously worked at the White House as a Personnel Director. After recommending Charlie Young for the job as President Bartlet's body man rather than the son of a major Democratic donor, she was fired from her position at the White House. Charlie brought her to President Bartlett to repay her. The West Wing is an American political drama television series created by Aaron Sorkin that was originally broadcast on NBC from September 22, 1999, to May 14, 2006. The series is set primarily in the West Wing of the White House, where the Oval Office and offices of presidential senior personnel are located, during the fictional two-term Democratic administration of President Josiah Bartlet.
The show was produced by Warner Bros. Television and features an ensemble cast, including Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, John Spencer, Bradley Whitford, Martin Sheen, Janel Moloney, Marlee Matlin and Stockard Channing. For the first four seasons, there were three executive producers: Sorkin (lead writer of the first four seasons), Thomas Schlamme (primary director), and John Wells. After Sorkin left the series at the end of the fourth season, Wells assumed the role of head writer, with later executive producers being directors Alex Graves and Christopher Misiano, and writers Lawrence O'Donnell and Peter Noah. The West Wing has been regarded by many publications as one of the greatest television shows of all time. It has received praise from critics, political science professors, and former White House staffers and has been the subject of critical analysis. The West Wing received a multitude of accolades, including two Peabody Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and 26 Primetime Emmy Awards, including the award for Outstanding Drama Series, which it won four consecutive times from 2000 to 2003.
Lily Tomlin, one of America's foremost comediennes, continues to venture across an ever-widening range of media, starring in television, theater, motion pictures, animation, video, and social media. Her career is a testament to her incredible talent and dedication to her craft, spanning over five decades. Tomlin has become a trailblazer in the world of comedy, paving the way for future female comedians. Tomlin first gained acclaim for her extraordinary work on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In with iconic characters like Edith Ann and Ernestine. Most recently, Tomlin starred in the award-winning show Grace and Frankie, a series created by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris for Netflix. The series stared Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as the eponymous Grace Hanson and Frankie Bergstein, two aging women who form an unlikely friendship after their husbands reveal they are in love with each other and plan to get married. Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen, Brooklyn Decker, Ethan Embry, June Diane Raphael, and Baron Vaughn co-star in supporting roles.
Other notable characters from Tomlin in film include Linnea Reese, a gospel-singing mother of two deaf children who has an affair with a womanizing country singer in Robert Altman's Nashville, a performance for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. Violet Newstead who joins her on-screen coworkers (played by Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton) in seeking revenge on their monstrous and sexist boss, Franklin M. Hart Jr., (played by Dabney Coleman) in the comedy 9 to 5, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Doreen Piggot in Robert Altman's Short Cuts, Cher's best-friend and American compatriot Georgie Rockwell in Tea with Mussolini, deadpan private investigator, and existentialist Vivian Jaffe in I Heart Huckabees, and Country-Western singer Rhonda Johnson in Robert Altman's final film A Prairie Home Companion.
Tomlin is well-known for supporting philanthropic organizations, particularly those focused on animal welfare, civil rights, health care, protection of elephants, women’s issues, AIDS-related organizations, and environmental concerns, overcoming homelessness and supporting the LGBTQ community in all aspects of life. Tomlin has contributed in other ways to improve conditions for all living things, such as founding the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Lily Tomlin/Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center. Tomlin and Wagner together also founded the Goosebump Garden at the internationally known LGBT Fenway Health Center in Boston and have been involved in its growth for over 25 years.
