THURMAN MUNSON played his entire 11-year professional baseball career for the New York Yankees, from 1969-1979. A perennial All-Star, Munson is the only Yankee to win both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards. Considered the "heart and soul" of the Yankees, Munson was named the first team captain since Lou Gehrig. He led the Yankees to three consecutive World Series appearances from 1976 to 1978, and two consecutive World Series championships in 1977 and 1978. Tragically, Munson died in 1979 at the age of 32 while practicing landing his Cessna Citation at Akron–Canton Airport.
JOE DIMAGGIO, legendary baseball icon, New York Yankees Hall-of-Famer, All-Star, and 3-time American League MVP likewise played his entire 13-year career for the New York Yankees. Among his countless accolades, is his 56-game hitting streak (May 15 – July 16, 1941), a record that still stands.
Nicknamed "Joltin' Joe" and "The Yankee Clipper", DiMaggio was a three-time MVP winner and an All-Star in each of his 13 seasons. During his career with the Yankees, the club won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships. At the time of his retirement, he ranked fifth in career home runs (361) and sixth in career slugging percentage (.579). Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, DiMaggio was voted the sport's greatest living player in a poll taken during the baseball centennial year of 1969.
