“Basketball Superstars” is a limited edition serigraph (1970), signed by Mr. LeRoy Neiman, which features legendary basketball players including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Irving, Willis Reed, Bill Russell, and others. The image was used for the cover of the 1977 NBA All-Star Game Program in Milwaukee (WI) and displays Mr. Neiman’s characteristic vibrant splashes of color and quick brushstrokes which parallel the swift and dynamic action of legends of the court. Mr. Neiman painted every type of sporting event during his lifetime, with his influence earning him the title of “Father of Contemporary Sport Art.” The work is pencil signed to the lower right margin, with A.P. to the lower left margin. The serigraph is displayed under glass in an off white mat and wood frame. Framing by Jack's Art Gallery in West Harlem, established in 1984, providing high quality framing, focusing in preservation techniques. A Certificate of Authenticity, from the LeRoy Neiman Foundation, is included to certify that this “Basketball Superstars” print was created by, and from the estate of, LeRoy Neiman. This print was a donation from the renowned artist to the Arts Horizons LeRoy Neiman Art Center in Harlem, which operated for nearly a decade from 2008 through 2018. The center carried the mission to strengthen the community through the arts by providing innovative art classes and exhibits which celebrate the rich history and future of the Harlem Community. The mission continues through Arts Horizons New York and its parent company Arts Horizons, now in its 42nd year of operation. Artist bio:
LeRoy Neiman (1921-2012) is arguably America's most popular living artist. Known for his brilliantly colored semi-abstract paintings of sporting events and leisure activities, Neiman has perfected an energetic style that seems to explode with dramatic intensity. His unique talents have made his work so admired that he has brought art into the lives of millions of Americans. Neiman served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his return in 1946, Neiman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago on the G.I. Bill and then served on the faculty for ten years. During the time Neiman was teaching, he was exhibiting art in competitions and winning prizes. In 1954, Neiman began his association with Playboy Magazine. Since 1960, he has traveled the world observing and painting leisure life, social activities and athletic competitions including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby, championship boxing, golf, tennis, as well as night life, entertainment, jazz and the world of casino gambling. Neiman has sponsored and supported several organizations from coast to coast that foster art activities for underprivileged children such as The LeRoy Neiman Center for Youth in San Francisco and the Arts Horizons LeRoy Neiman Center in Harlem. He also has established the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University in New York and scholarships at his Alma Mater. He has received five honorary doctorates and numerous awards, proclamations and citations and has authored twelve books of his art. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the State Hermitage Museum in Russia, Wadham College at Oxford and in museums and art galleries the world over, as well as in private and corporate collections.
