For the release of his 11th solo studio album, titled No Pier Pressure, Wilson has returned to Capitol Records, his original label home with The Beach Boys. Alan Jardine’s family moved west from Ohio when he was a young child, eventually settling in Hawthorne, California, where he attended Hawthorne High School with Brian Wilson and they both played on the football team. Jardine tells a story about how the two became good friends: quarterback Wilson called the wrong play and Jardine, the halfback, was clobbered by two defense men, breaking his leg. It was at a school assembly that Jardine first heard Brian, his brother Carl Wilson, and their cousin Mike Love perform. Off and on, over the next few years, Alan encouraged Brian that they should sing together, and when their initial pairing with some now-forgotten classmates at El Camino Junior College did not jell, Brian suggested trying it again with Carl and Love. Thus, the Beach Boys were formed, and it could be said that Brian and Jardine were the first two in the band.
In June 2010, Jardine released his long-awaited solo album, A Postcard from California, initially as a downloadable item available online at iTunes,Amazon.com and similar outlets. A commercially distributed physical CD of the entire album was released in April 2012 on RoboRecords (a division of Waterfront Entertainment Group LLC, distributed by Universal Music/Fontana Distribution). The new collection is brimming with good music and famous friends, including Neil Young, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Steve Miller, Glen Campbell, Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell (America), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Alec Baldwin, plus all of the remaining Beach Boys (including the late Carl Wilson) and more. The thirteen song collection (plus two bonus cuts) includes four tracks that comprise "the green side" of the album, songs that deal directly with the relationship between mankind and the environment. "Don't Fight the Sea," "Tidepool Interlude" and "A California Saga" are songs that reflect Al's deep love for the California coastline and his concern for the ecological health of the planet.
In 2012, Al Jardine reunited with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and David Marks for the Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour, which kicked off with a performance at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles and has been followed by a spring/summer tour including dates in the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, Singapore and Australia. Al also contributed vocals to the 29th studio album from the Beach Boys (produced by Brian Wilson) called That's Why God Made The Radio and sings lead (and whistles) on the track "From There To Back Again."
Al Jardine is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Grammy in 2001 as a member of the Beach Boys. His official web site, www.aljardine.com, has the latest news updates, tour dates, pictures, videos and more.
